el Camino de Santiago Adventure Stories
This week we’re bringing you stories by 3 people’s 500 plus mile trek on el Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage in Spain. All three of this week’s storytellers walked the Camino Frances which is the most popular Camino -there are multiple routes across Europe.
The Camino Frances:
The Camino Frances:
- Starts in the very South of France
- Traverses along the northern part of Spain to the town of Santiago which is where the relic of Saint Jame’s bones lies. It is fabled that his bones were discovered at the site of that exact spot where the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela stands.
- The trail itself is very well developed and marked better than any race you’ve probably been in.
- People you pass along the way, all greet you by saying Buen Camino meaning “Good Way or Walk or Path”
- People come from all over the world to walk.
- The trail snakes through villages, churches, monasteries, communal water and wine fountains - yes even a wine fountain! - that are hundreds and sometimes thousands of years old.
- The pilgrimage in Spain is steeped in the Catholic tradition, but nowadays people from all walks of life travel along the path.
- The path is known to be therapeutic, introspective, and reflective and this week you’ll get to hear a little about all of these things from our storytellers.

Riki Thompson's Camino Adventure Story: Pilgrimage to Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela
Riki discovered she was an explorer when she moved overseas after college. LilExplorer, as she is also known, can often be found cartooning and blogging about her adventures.
Adventure Quotes - el Camino de Santiago PilgrimOne of the first questions a pilgrim is asked when on the Camino is, “Why are you walking The Way?” For me it was a perfect storm of events. I was recovering from thyroid cancer and my marriage was falling apart, and all at the same time. During a marriage counseling session, I shared that one of the things I was missing was adventure and the explorer part of me was dying. A couple weeks later, my husband told me about the movie "The Way" and said it looked like something I might want to do. After watching the movie, I did some research and put the Camino on my bucket list. It would end up being a couple years before I could walk The Way of St. James. |
