Rebecca Hamilton's (NOBO) Adventure Story
Places to Hike > Oregon Hiking Trails > Oregon Hikes > Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)
- An Ohio native who found her heart out in Oregon. She likes to lift up rocks to see what's underneath.
- Started her hike solo & NOBO in Ashland, OR
- Joined up with two thru hikers after first encountering the nighthawks a little north of the Sky Lakes Wilderness off the Pacific Crest Trail and hiked together until Mt. Hood.
- Rebecca finished the last two days on her own to round out her 440 mile section hike along the PCT.
Nighthawks
In Rebecca's story, we heard her terrifying experience with nighthawks near the Sky Lakes Wilderness. She describes in detail the sounds they made and the fight or flight response the sounds triggered in her.
Rebecca says, "As I learned during my hike, nighthawks (Chordeiles minor) are not bears although they can make a profoundly disturbing and loud sound, called "booming," as part of their mating rituals. A reasonable person could easily mistake it for a bear. Nighthawks are not at all ferocious unless you are an insect; they are in fact quite small, about the size of a hard-shell taco, and also kind of cute."

In male's courtship display flight, his wingbeats become even more stiff and choppy as he circles and hovers high in the air, calling repeatedly; then he goes into a steep dive, with a rushing or "booming" sound made by air passing through wing feathers at bottom of dive. Landing near female, he spreads his tail, rocks back and forth, and calls. Nest site is on ground or bare open soil, often in a sandy place; also on gravel roofs, sometimes on top of a stump or other raised object. No nest built, eggs laid on flat surface. ~ Audubon Society page about nighthawks
