River floats conjure up images of peace, serenity, and relaxation, but outdoor adventurers know that just change a few factors, and rivers can quickly become death traps. This week’s storytellers can vouch. A park ranger made a life changing decision after nearly drowning on a packrafting trip in Alaska, and an all-around-outdoor-adventure-athlete describes his first wilderness trip along the Salmon River towing along his now mandatory piece of gear—his wheelchair—and the new challenges he encountered because of it.

This week's featured adventure stories
Cassi Knight's Adventure Story: That didn't end as expected.Cassi joined us in Portland, OR, and she describes herself as a trail runner, backpacker, cross country skier, paleontologist and hopeless lover of wilderness. She worked for the National Park Service for about 5 years, at several different parks, and at the time of the story was working for the Denali National Park science division. She lived in Alaska doing that job for about 3 years.
Her story involves a near-death encounter, and when asked if there was anything she thought people should know about her trip, She said, "as straightforwards as it sounds, and as easy as it is to say, I learned to really trust myself and my judgement and to eddy out when I feel uncomfortable and want to eddy out. I to this day wished that I had listened to my judgement, gotten out on the gravel bar, scouted, and evaluated the situation for myself." Josh Hancock's Adventure Story: New GearJosh Hancock is a 35 year old environmental engineer residing in Bend OR. 4 years ago he survived a climbing accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury that left him without the use of his legs, and dealing with daily chronic pain. He continues to explore his ability to move through and interact with the world despite his different physical abilities. His story recounts one of those experiences - his first time wilderness rafting with wheelchair in tow.
Josh likes to road bike, mountain bike (which is referred to as Off Road Hand Cycling in the world of adaptive athletes) sea kayak, river kayak, raft, surf, Nordic ski, and alpine ski. Josh is also involved with Oregon Adaptive Sports, which is an adaptive community organization based in Bend OR. OAS is a place you can learn how to use new gear (rentals and lessons), find new sports, and the get support you need to get outside. Find out more about Oregon Adaptive Sports. If you're based outside of Oregon, also check out Outdoors for All, who are also dedicated to helping people find the gear and training adaptive athletes need to get outside. |
