Ocean adventure stories that include classic Thanksgiving themes like family experiences that shape us, human connections across different cultures in a big world, and getting so mad at someone that you flip them off and shout expletives about them (though not during political discussion during Thanksgiving dinner).

This week's featured adventure stories
Jorja Henderson's Adventure Story: Whale EncountersJorja Henderson is 14 years old and a student at the Whatcom Hills Waldorf School in Bellingham, WA. She is an avid eventer (think triathlon on horseback), bone collector, and loves more than anything to immerse herself in wild places. Every August for the last 9 years her family has traveled to the far North end of Vancouver Island to explore and camp for 2 weeks via sea kayak in and around the Johnston Straight / Broughten Archipelago of British Columbia. Her experiences with whales over the years have been magnificent and life changing ... this past summer however was one that Jorja will never forget.
Her family blog is at http://hendersonbasecamp.blogspot.com/ A whale encounter on the Johnstone StraitThough this isn't the exact encounter that Jorja talks about in her story, her mom sent on this amazing video of a similar experience with a Humpback whale on the Johnstone Strait on the Northeast Coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
Addison Asuchak's Story: Message in Bottle - literally this time.
Kate Mannle's Adventure Story: God's GumdropKate Mannle sent on these photos of "God's Gumdrop," the coral formation she discussed in this week's story. The photographer, Leah Meth, is a talented underwater photographer who you can follow on Instagram @leahmeth.
Kate is working on some amazing things. She is the Director of Campaigning for Conservation at Rare, an international conservation organization. Her program is focused on teaching behavioral change communications to staff in the field so they can be more effective at achieving conservation and development goals in local communities. You can find out more about Rare at:
Kate says she would love to know if coral bleaching has impacted "God's Gumdrop", but she's been unable to figure it out, despite a lot of digging. The official name of the dive was "Crew Bommie" and she mentioned that it's on the Ribbon Reefs someplace between Lizard Island and Cooktown. If this rings a bell for anyone familiar with the area, please send us a message! In the Podcast, Kate mentioned her friend Gator. He has co-founded an organization called Coral Vita, and (among other things) they are growing climate resilient strains of coral to transplant onto degraded reefs to directly confront the coral bleaching problem that she mentions at the end of her story. |
