Note from Angel MathisI loved this story by Susan from the start, but I had no idea the places this story was going to take Boldly Went. Susan’s story was shared through our podcast at the same time that, then nominee, now Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, had been exposed as a sexual assault perpetrator.
Multiple women came forward with their truths about Kavanaugh, but rather than collectively doing what was right for women, the USA dug their political trenches and found ways to justify the ongoing assault against women. I was extremely disheartened. Rather than resigning to it though, and wallowing in my powerlessness, I got busy adjusting our podcast production schedule and worked closely with Tim to carefully select 2 stories by 2 women who demonstrated extreme strength. Out of that, the 77th episode of Boldly Went was born. We called it, "We Can Do Hard," titled from a quote taken directly from Susan’s mouth. Susan strongly supported this episode after its release. I would learn a few weeks later, when I finally had the opportunity to read Susan’s book, called Inside: One Woman's Journey Through the Inside Passage, that she had a very personal reason for raging against sexual assault too. Many women do. (Her book is a really insightful look into the grit it takes to paddle all alone through the Inside Passage chock full of bear encounters, love, friendship, and other life changing experiences, and I recommend it.) As I reflect over the last year at Boldly Went, leveraging the voice of Boldly Went to speak against injustices such as these are my proudest moments. And to do it in solidarity with you strong adventurers feels even more powerful. Men and women showed up in response to this message, and for that, I am grateful….and hopeful.
