Field Notes
Seventy48
We're excited to bring you a live (and not so live) multimedia experience from the very first Seventy48 - the spiritual spawn of the Race to Alaska (R2AK), and the most interesting boat race in the world!
The rules are simple: boat racers have 48 hours to move 70 miles on the water between Tacoma and Port Townsend, WA, using only human power. No sailing, but otherwise all seafaring craft without engines are eligible. The winner takes home $12,000. The losers don't. Everyone from Olympians to novices can (and do) participate. The race organizers say that it's hard enough that it's a bad idea to even try. We're here for that.
You can follow race progress on the Seventy48 website, starting a 5:30 PM on June 11th.
Boldly Went is here to tell you the story of the event, and will be sharing racer interviews, photos, event history and highlights from the Pre-Funk, the start, the finish, and the post-race ruckus which doubles as the start of the Race to Alaska (R2AK).
Our goal is to make this the virtual version of hanging out at Seventy48 and helping you get to know the characters involved.
